Jacqueline: Alright, Don, have you ever received those weird messages offering fast cash?

Don: All the time, Jacq, all the time. Every week I hear about someone, kena scam lah, and it's always heartbreaking, isn't it? Because these people are just trying to earn a living.

Jacqueline: Absolutely, absolutely.

Don: Yeah, so always verify with the Ministry of Law. Don't play-play with your hard-earned money, okay?

Jacqueline: Definitely. Most platforms do cover accidents during active jobs. But you also want to check your rider agreement carefully as well.

Don: Yeah, that's right. They study how we work, what platforms we use, and what we worry about. Then, they create very convincing scams based on all this info.

Jacqueline: Yeah, and it looks so real, doesn't it? So, red flag number one: legitimate companies will never, ever ask you to pay money upfront to get a job. If any real platform wanted to hire you, they wouldn't ask you for deposits.

Don: Yeah, and another sneaky one: messages pretending to be from CPF or LTA, asking for your Singpass login details. That one is really extra sneaky. They'll say that there's a problem with your account and that you need to verify immediately. Then you get that sense of panic, right?

Jacqueline: Of course. Then you panic, right? You just click, enter your details, and before you know it, guess what? They steal your login number—your login information.

Don: Yeah, so always protect yourself by installing ScamShield, right? This is a suite of tools to combat scams made by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Singapore Police Force, Open Government Products, and the National Crime Prevention Council. You see, so many people helping you, protecting you.

Jacqueline: Your Avengers.

Don: The Avengers of anti-scam, you know. So turn on your spam filters and ask someone you trust before acting on any of these things.

Jacqueline: Absolutely, because sometimes you're emotional, scared. You do want to test it out—ask someone you trust as well. Let's talk about something that many gig workers don't know about until it's too late: insurance.

Don: Wow, this one is very important but also very confusing. Many gig riders and drivers think they're covered by their platform, but actually...

Jacqueline: Yes, the dot, dot, dot... which is why today we want to explain what insurance covers, what you might be missing, and how to choose simple options that fit your life stage.

Don: That's right. And we're not trying to sell you anything expensive. We're just talking about practical, affordable protection that makes sense for gig workers.

Jacqueline: So let's start from the very beginning, with the understanding of what platform insurance does not cover. Most platforms provide some coverage for accidents during active jobs. Now, this is where affordable top-up insurance comes in. You're not replacing your platform insurance—just filling the gaps.

Don: So here's what you need to do: check your platform rider's website or help centre to understand exactly what's covered. Don't just assume you're protected.

Jacqueline: And here's something that many people don't know as well: you can use your MediSave to pay for selected policies where possible.

Don: Instead of just letting your MediSave sit there, you can use it to pay for certain insurance premiums. It's like using your own money—but tax-free.

Jacqueline: And these plans are designed specifically for gig workers, so they are affordable. We're talking about, like, $20, $30 per month—not hundreds of dollars.

Don: There's also micro-insurance plans like Singlife Gig Protect or FWD's daily hospital income insurance. These can cost as little as $20 a month and cover up to $100 a day of income replacement.

Jacqueline: I think what you're hearing us say, the key core idea is this: make insurance more accessible. So instead of paying one big premium, you can save a bit each month and get some insurance coverage at the same time.

Don: But here's the key word, okay? During active jobs, if you're on the way to pick up an order but haven't accepted it yet, or if you're heading home after your shift, you might not be covered.

Jacqueline: Good to know. So the key thing here is: it doesn't have to be complicated. Choose one policy to start with. Something is better than nothing. Let's do a bit of reflection here once again. Okay. If you had to stop work tomorrow—if you had to stop working tomorrow—would you still be able to pay rent the next week?

Don: And be honest with yourself when you're answering this. If the answer is no, then you really need some form of income protection, even if it's just basic coverage.

Jacqueline: That's good food for thought, because maybe it's knowing that if you're hospitalised, you get $100 per day. That's an assurance, right? Or maybe it's knowing that if you can't work for three months, your family will still have some sort of income.

Don: So true. And here's another question: what kind of cover would give you peace of mind right now?

Jacqueline: Which is why it's always important as well to check if the insurance company is licensed by MAS. You can verify this on the MAS website—just like we talked about with investment platforms.

Don: Remember, insurance is not an investment. It's protection against things that could derail your financial plans.

Jacqueline: And that's a wrap my friends. This is Make Your Money Hustle Like You, a financial literacy podcast. Until next time.
